Forklift Repair

An operator usually thinks of his forklift as an investment and as with any investment, an operator should protect his forklift. An operator should always perform a regular preventive maintenance on his forklift. It is a good routine to always make sure that your forklift is maintained properly, whether you do it personally, or have someone in a hope check it for you. Here is a short guideline on forklift maintenance from an experienced forklift operator.

First off, you need to start your forklift and let it run for a short while as you listen to the engine. You should pay close attention to any knocks, squealing from the fan belts, or any exhaust leaks that you might hear. After this, try driving the forklift forward and backward. Check if there are any slips or wheel issues. Then shut the engine off. To perform preventive measures, check the horn, warning devices, outside and back-up lights, overhead guard and gauges of your forklift. Check the wiring if you have faulty lights or burnt out bulbs. Next, you should check on your batteries. You should make it a habit of cleaning out your battery terminal, cables and connectors. Check that all cells are filled properly to the needed level. If possible, apply a protectant to the connectors to avoid erosion. After this, leave your cables disconnected. After this, drain the oil and change your oil, hydraulics, transmission, fuel and air filters. Make sure to note the date that you changed your filter before you install it. Check the level of your anti-freeze and refill if needed. Now, go under the machine and check the drive axle. If your forklift has a grease fitting, you should grease the axle. Next, make sure that your forklift belt is free from frays and cracks.  Now check your exhaust system and make sure that there are no holes or cracks in it. Check that your tires are not worn out or cracking. Next, check your forklift’s clutch pedal, steering cylinder and drag links. There shouldn’t be any bends or leaks. Now, hoist up the forks and check your hydraulic system for leaks. If you find leaks in the system, tighten the hydraulics. If there are still leaks present even after tightening the system, you might need to change the fittings or replace an o-ring. While checking your hydraulics, also pay attention to any bending or cracks on the forks. If the forks have started to crack, bend or bow, it should be reported to management as this may cause potential problems. Lubricate your hoist mechanism and tie-rod ends and any other fitting on the forklift. If you are replacing your forklift’s brakes, you should also check the wheel bearings. After all of these are done, reconnect your battery and start the machine. Again,. Listen for any unusual sounds.

Finally, give your forklift a good wipe down. When available, use a spray cleaner. It is recommended that you use an oil-based spray. A good habit for proper maintenance is to have a checklist of preventive maintenance steps.
