Electrical forklifts are best for indoor uses like in manufacturing and warehouses. Most of all, electric forklifts are best for two main reasons.
The first is that electric forklifts produce absolutely no emissions. This is important for any operators who plan on using their forklift indoors. Out of all internal combustion forklifts, only propane-fueled forklifts can be used indoors, but even these models need a good amount of ventilation. The other advantage is the cutting of fuel costs. Electric forklifts have lower operations cost compared to internal combustion forklifts. Unfortunately, this is also the main reason why electric forklifts are more expensive than internal combustion forklifts. Electric forklifts cost 20-40% more than a regular forklift. Electric forklifts are also much quieter than your average forklifts. Since electric forklifts have fewer parts and are usually used in cleaner environments, this means that they also have a much longer lifespan than an IC forklift. The biggest problem for electric forklifts is their battery downtime. An electric forklift is powered by a standard 8-hour battery, which loosely translates to 5-6 hours if used continuously. If you plan on using an electric forklift for 2-3 shifts, then you will need extra batteries. This is because charging the batteries take 8 hours and another 8 hours for them to cool own long enough before you can use them. An extra battery can set you back anywhere from $1,000-$2,000. Another problem would be finding a place for your battery charging station. These have to be kept at a ventilated, dry place that is temperature controlled. Since these forklifts are electric, they are designed to be used out in the rain, neither are they suitable for constant outdoor use.
Take these things into consideration before you decide on buying a forklift. Weigh the advantages with the disadvantages. Make sure you anticipate where and for how long you will be using your forklift.
